Snow White, Weeds, and Weddings

26 Feb 2015

Carpets of white flowers are brightening up even the darkest corners of of the woodlands at Haddo this week.

We're still waiting for the first of the wild crocuses and daffodils to come into flower (although they're not far away) but the snowdrops are definitely the star of the show at the moment.

A Swan Conundrum

We've had a couple of reports from visitors of swans trapped in netting on the lake over the past week or so. After a few trips out to find the swans all looking absolutely fine, we've finally worked out what's been happening.

The swans have been feeding quite regularly in a patch of dead pond weed at the far end of the lake. They're swimming a bit with their head and neck completely submerged, and when they lift their heads up again they end up with big clumps of weed draped across their back. It looks quite alarming (especially from a distance) but it falls off fairly quickly and the swans themselves are absolutely fine!

Wedding Open Day

On Sunday the NTS are holding their annual wedding open day. The property will be open from 12-4pm and there'll be a range of wedding suppliers from photographers to florists to help you plan your big day. You'll also be able to talk to the NTS staff about having your wedding in the Chapel or Library here at Haddo House.

Starlight Treats

We're pleased to say that our incredibly popular wildlife photography workshops will be back at Haddo in June, and we're hopefully looking to offer something a bit different this time around. As well as a seabird photography workshop (based at Bullers of Buchan as part of the Energetica Festival), we're also thinking of running a night time star photography workshop as well. If you'd be interested in a night-time session then let us know (either by email or via our Facebook page) and if there's enough interest then we'll get it in the diary!

We're also getting ready for our big owl day on Sunday 15th March. The owls from the Owl & The Pussycat Sanctuary will be in the park from 1pm, and we'll have fun bushcraft for kids and then an starlight walk to look and listen for owls in the park (along with a few glow in the dark tricks and tests as well!). You can find out all the information by clicking on events at the top of the page.
