Wild Woodcraft

4 Aug 2016

Not even the thunder and lighting stopped us getting out and about in the woods at Haddo this week...

The very wet but mild conditions here at Haddo provide an ecological advantage for some species more than others.  The mosses and ferns are doing particularly well, reminding us more of a temperate rainforest such as you find on the very wet west coast of South Island, New Zealand, where it rains almost every day of the year!  Our mosses at Haddo are vibrant green and growing on dead and living trees, forest floor and fence posts, just about anywhere they can get a hold!  It’s a great opportunity for macro photography if anyone wants to enter our Haddo Arts Festival Photography Competition!

Bushcraft in the woods

Despite the rain over 35 children enjoyed the bushcraft activities in the outdoor classroom at Haddo on Wednesday.  There was a camp fire, knotting, weaving of parachute cord to make bracelets, raising a tarp for shelter and toasting marshmallows over the camp fire.

Sale time in the NTS Shop and Tearoom treats

There are some items on sale in the NTS shop if you need gifts for birthdays or other occasions.  Regular stock clearance means you can often get a real bargain of up to off 50% some items.  You can choose from scented candles, gift cards, craftwork and some food items.  The friendly staff will help you find a bargain.

Tearoom treats are available in the NTS Tearoom where our new baker, Beth, is producing some wonderful new flavours in cakes and scones.  Why not call in to sample the Carrot Cup Cakes, Courgette and Lime Loaf or Lemon and Passionfruit cake?  Fresh herbs grown at Haddo by our volunteers in the Country Park are now being used in some dishes to give a more local flavour!
